Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. on April 16, 1947, in New York City, is a former professional basketball player widely regarded as one of the greatest in NBA history. Standing at 7 feet 2 inches, he was known for his scoring ability, particularly his skyhook shot, which became his signature move.
Abdul-Jabbar played college basketball at UCLA under coach John Wooden, winning three consecutive NCAA championships from 1967 to 1969. He was selected as the first overall pick in the 1969 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, where he won his first NBA championship in 1971.
In 1975, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he spent the majority of his career. During his time with the Lakers, he won five more NBA titles and became the league’s all-time leading scorer, a record he still holds today. He was a 19-time All-Star, 15-time All-NBA selection, and won six MVP awards, the most in NBA history.
Off the court, Abdul-Jabbar is an accomplished author and activist, often speaking on issues of race, culture, and social justice. He has written several books and is known for his efforts to promote education and awareness about various societal issues.
