Alica Schmidt set to retire
Alica Schmidt, often hailed as the “world’s sexiest athlete,” has recently made significant shifts in her athletic career. At 26, Schmidt represented Germany in the mixed 4x400m relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The team finished seventh in their heat, leading to their elimination.
Post-Olympics, Schmidt announced a transition in her athletic focus. She expressed a desire to explore the 800m event, stating, “Back in 2022, I decided that I wanted to give the 800m a shot after the Paris Olympics, so now it means… I’m going for it next year.” To pursue this goal, she embarked on high-altitude training in Johannesburg, South Africa, aiming to join an international 800m training group.
However, in January 2025, Schmidt faced health challenges following hip surgery. She candidly shared her struggles, admitting, “I was ‘100% ready’ to retire after 2024 hip surgery setbacks and prolonged recovery.” Despite these setbacks, Schmidt has expressed a continued passion for running and is determined to overcome these challenges.
Schmidt’s journey reflects the complexities athletes face, balancing physical health, evolving career goals, and public expectations. Her resilience and adaptability continue to inspire fans worldwide.
